He followed Nushirwan's example after his passing,

And was lofty in glory, rich in virtues:

Muhammad, the noble one among his sons, a man of high attainments,

And winner of the twin honors of his striving and high office.

Then came Jalal al-Din, the noblest heir,

The finest son and noblest successor.

A youth like rain and sword, hoped for and feared,

    For a supplicant's enrichment or a foe's death.

So I said: life for glory after his death,

And a rising star of glory after the last had set.

So I had in him a smiling ally,

Against hardship, a shatterer of calamity's army.

I directed him with commands and prohibitions, as though I

Were his commander wherever my needs arose.

    واِلا فَباكٍ لي بُكاءَ الحَبائبِ

    If he could help, he charged with a lion's charge;

Otherwise, he wept for me as loved ones weep.

Whenever I called him in a calamity,

He came to me boldly, disregarding consequences.

His own weakness mattered little to him when it safeguarded me,

And his humiliation, so long as my standing and honor stayed high.

I never knew that death, after Muhammad,

Was racing neck and neck with the east wind and the led mounts,

And that my hopes in his endeavors were delusion,

And that his remaining stay was only a rider's halt.

What grieved me, too, was losing him while still in bloom,

    Fresh as a playfully swaying moringa branch;

And that the nights had not granted him his wish,

Nor had he drunk his fill of the water of hopes and aspirations.

Ah, my grief—while separation burns the lover—

For one snatched away, like the full moon among the stars!

His soul was full of cares, but he concealed his grief,

And appeared to people merry and playful.

I lost you as thirsty she-camels, exhausted

By ten-day thirst and daylong travel, lose sweet watering places.

Ceaseless trotting had wasted them; brought low

By swift strides were their lofty humps and withers.

Then, when they hoped for water where they had known it,

They were made to kneel on rough ground in a far-off wilderness.

By morning they pawed the hard earth in bewilderment,

For calamity had come between water and drinker.

I swear that sweet watering place is less than what

I lost, and my grief exceeds the camels' grief.

God be with you! As for patience, it has forsaken me

Over you; as for sorrow, it is my companion.

There is no path to forgetting my love for you,

Nor will my ardent love fade, though death intervenes.

Many a night visitor you entertained, and a frightened man

You sheltered, and a bond of friendship you preserved for a friend.

And many an anguished, distressed man, bound to a pressing need,

Driven off like thirsty she-camels from other herds,

Sought to overcome something fearsome and unyielding, as though

He grappled with a man of ‘Ad, impregnable on every side.

Courage and reason had failed to rescue him,

And the points of his counsels and keen swords had dulled.

You helped him with honeyed kindness that surpassed

The thrusts of long spears and the press of battalions.

May God not send you far away, O best of those present,

Who helped in great calamity, O best of the absent!

I shall weep for you while clouds pour and cooing rises from the

Doves, and while gazelles race across the desert plains.
