Gently, son of al-Husayn, for indeed

My affection is mail whose rivets cannot be loosened.

Do you think my refraining from visits a betrayal

Of my pledge to you, though the days abound in treachery?

    يُطاول عُلْويَّ النجومِ قصيرُها

    A Dārimite spirit refused such betrayal, out of loyalty;

Even its lowest reach rivals the loftiest stars.

    It loves despite men's baseness and injustice;

How much more when their goodness exhausts all praise!

Noble houses are alike to me, whether I visit them—

If my affection is sincere—or do not visit them.

There dwells one drunk with glory, hastening

Toward praise, whom noble deeds follow as their chief.

Handsome as a sword blade, his bounty overflowing,

When the ash-gray year's pool has run dry.

He bears a keen-witted heart and an alertness

Whose presence reveals the secret of the unseen.

When Saʿd al-Dīn is named—eloquence and reason,

And a rich store of excellence whose fullness is beyond reach.

And your bright, fair qualities shine,

Dispelling night's deep shadows and illuminating them.

They surpass the clouds' water in gentleness,

When their downpour gives drink to a solitary noble man.

    Know—may blame spare you—that I am pledged

To love, as long as halters guide the riding camels.
