    And I, though you have not judged my case fairly,

    and have marred the beauty of my loyalty with suspicion,

    and have rejected my excuses, though they are well known,

    like the rising forenoon, plainly visible and unconcealed,

    and have trampled sincerity beneath estrangement's hollow sole,

    with reprehensible bias and hostility,

    still praise you, in your absence and your presence.

    And where is everlasting praise to match mine?

    أبى حُسْنُ عَهْدي جَحْدَهُ ووفائي

    Nor do I forget your former bounty;

    my good faith and loyalty forbid me to deny it.

    But you thought that every affection

    is incomplete unless accompanied by a meeting.

    And the case of Uways and the Prophet Muhammad,

    according to sound reports from the learned,

    is proof that affection has its home in the

    hearts, and that nearness is like remoteness.

    And strange it is: reproach against one who is not guilty,

    and a sincere friend offering an apology.

    So say to Imad al-Din: Show kindness, and do not squander

    my matchless praise of you and my loyalty.

    Nor reject the proof while it shines forth,

    like one who seeks to hide Dhukaʾ, the sun, with both palms.

    ومُحْرِزَها عَنْ نَجْدةٍ وعَطاءِ

    I have known you to pursue noble deeds through generosity,

    and to win them through valor and giving;

    لَطيفُ نَسيمٍ بالغَداةِ رُخاءِ

    and to be gentler than water from clouds, over which blows

    a delicate breeze, soft at dawn;

    إذا هَفْوَةٌ حَلَّتْ حُبى الحُلماءِ

    and weightier in forbearance than Thabir and Yadhbul,

    when a lapse unfastens the knee-bands of the forbearing;

    pious, fearing God in secret and in public,

    and praising Him in hardship and ease.

    وعِنْدَكَ سَحٌّ مِن حَياً وحَياءِ

    Your passion is piety, and your quest is right guidance;

    and yours is a downpour of rain and modesty.

    So do not break the consensus by forsaking a sincere man,

    whose heart's motives are pure toward his companions.

    His sincerity in affection has spread and won recognition

    from the hard-hearted sons of this world, without pretense.

    For without love, I would not keep my eyes awake in praise,

    hoping for your approval, not hoping for a gift.
