Like meadows on rugged uplands, brushed by the east wind

shortly before dawn, already watered by heavy-hanging clouds—

so is the mention of Nasir al-Din in every gathering,

when the virtues of the noblest men are recounted.

Awe-inspiring, the nights obey him; and it is only

one bold in battle, an ocean of noble deeds, whom they obey.

Firmer in patient composure than Thabir and Yadhbul,

and bolder and keener than spears and sharp swords.

    وللفتكِ ما ضمَّتْ رحابُ الملاحمِ

    For forbearance is all the council holds—and a grain [sense unclear];

and for deadly force, all the broad expanses of battle hold.

His justice spread, until there fled in rout

from Syria, in fear, the armies of oppression.

And he struck such terror that no injustice crosses

an oppressor's mind, even if never put into action.

And in his presence, bounty almost befriends fire,

as it would a kindly, compassionate man of peace.

A hero whose resolve sends his swiftest steeds charging,

and his swords, in the close-locked press of battle.

So none outstrips him save from far, distant ground,

and no blows fall except on necks and skulls.

to an unblemished lineage in the stock of Ya'qub.

It nurtured him: he became the giver men seek, and the horseman of the

dawn, and a bearer of heavy obligations.

You obeyed high honor when you became its crown's

ally in driving off ruthless calamities.

And you so pleased glory that it beamed,

its features revealing a bright-toothed smile.

And it is glory enough for you to shelter from harm

the sons of proud lords, from the noblest of Quraysh and Hashim.

And he has always been a giver of great gifts, a protector of the

guest, and one who plunges into the depths of perilous straits.

    على الخير ساقي تُربها غيرُ نادمِ

    So grant him greater honor: the soil is noble;

he who waters its earth does not regret his kindness.

For your nature needs no urging toward glory,

and water by nature slakes those circling it in thirst.

And you have ever won each rich prize

of praise, whose memory endures at seasonal gatherings.

And praise has come to you, its tale abiding,

and good fortune has won you the mother of all spoils.
