رعى اللّهُ نجْراً خالدياً تَشعَّبَتْ

رعى اللّهُ نجْراً خالدياً تَشعَّبَتْ

أرومَتُه عن كابرٍ بعد كابرِ

أرومَتُه عن كابرٍ بعد كابرِ

May God preserve a far-branching Khalidid stock—

May God preserve a Khalidi lineage whose roots branched

its root sprung from one great forebear after another.

From one great forebear after another.

حَوى بين نُوشَرْوانهِ ومحمَّدٍ

حَوى بين نُوشَرْوانهِ ومحمَّدٍ

جوامعَ أشْتاتِ العُلى والمَفاخِرِ

جوامعَ أشْتاتِ العُلى والمَفاخِرِ

It gathered, between its Nushirvan and Muhammad,

It gathered, between its Nushirwan and Muhammad,

every scattered excellence of high glory and proud distinction.

All the scattered forms of eminence and glory.

وجاء جلالُ الدين أمْنَع نجْدَةً

وجاء جلالُ الدين أمْنَع نجْدَةً

إذا أحجمت نفس الكَمِيِّ المُغامِر

إذا أحجمت نفس الكَمِيِّ المُغامِر

And Jalal al-Din came, invincible in valor,

And Jalal al-Din came forth, mightiest in valor,

when the venturesome champion’s very spirit flinches:

When the daring armored warrior’s spirit shrank back.

فتىً لا يحُلُّ الضَّيْمُ عَقوةَ جاره

فتىً لا يحُلُّ الضَّيْمُ عَقوةَ جاره

ولا يحتمي أعْداؤهُ بالعَساكِرِ

ولا يحتمي أعْداؤهُ بالعَساكِرِ

a hero—oppression never alights in his protégé’s precinct,

A young man—no oppression lodges in his neighbor’s courtyard,

nor can his enemies find shelter behind armies.

Nor can his enemies shelter behind armies.

ولكنَّهُ إِمَّا صَديقٌ مُسامحٌ

ولكنَّهُ إِمَّا صَديقٌ مُسامحٌ

وإمَّا عدوٌّ طاعِنٌ في الحَناجِرِ

وإمَّا عدوٌّ طاعِنٌ في الحَناجِرِ

But he is either a forgiving friend,

But he is either a forgiving friend,

or a foe who thrusts at throats.

Or an enemy, thrusting into throats.
