It gladdens my eye to make them endure night travel,

swift as male ostriches of the barren, open plains,

to behold, on the pebbled bank of the Tigris,

a man radiant as a sword blade, rich in virtues.

I discerned in him a gleam of glory in his youth,

and did not stir until it had banished the deep darkness.

So he emerged as the faith’s pillar, Imad al-Din, and son of its pillar,

cheerful of countenance amid the frowns of calamity.

Death and famine die at his courtyard,

when he draws the twin swords of his aid and bounty.
