حمدتُI praised اصطباريmy endurance اِذwhen جرىran بيwith me إلىto مدىa point
أرانيshowed me ضياءradiance الشمسof the sun بعدafter غُروبsunset
I praised my endurance when it carried me to a point
that showed me the sun’s radiance after sunset.
وأيقنتُand I became certain أنthat الصبَّرpatience أكرمُnobler نجدةًas an aid
علىagainst الشرِّadversity منthan شختthin الغرارthe sword-edge ضروبhard-striking
And I knew for certain that patience is a nobler aid
against adversity than a thin-edged, hard-striking sword.
وماand not هيit اِلاexcept شمسa sun مجدٍof glory وسُؤددٍand eminence
تبلَّجُshines forth عنfrom طلقcheerful الجبينِof brow وهوبِa lavish giver
And it is but a sun of glory and eminence,
shining forth from a cheerful-browed, lavish giver:
فتىa young man الخيرof goodness سعدSaʿd الدينal-Dīn يحميprotects نَزيلَهhis guest
ويُمطرُand showers بالنَّعماءِwith blessings كلَّevery جَديبِbarren land
the noble youth Saʿd al-Dīn, who protects his guest
and showers blessings upon every barren land.
وبيand within me بُرحاءٌsevere anguish كالسِّنانِlike a spearpoint وهِزَّةٌand a stirring
اليكtoward you وباغيand the seeker المجدِof glory غيرُnot كَذوبِa liar
And I feel anguish like a spearpoint, and a stirring
toward you—and the seeker of glory is no liar.
