كيف الرُّقادُ ولاتَ حين رُقادِ
رَحَلَhas departed الشَّبابُyouth ولمand did not أفُزْI succeed بمرادِin attaining a wish
رَحَلَ الشَّبابُ ولم أفُزْ بمرادِ
How can I sleep, when this is no time for sleep?
How can I sleep when you are not there?
Youth has departed, and I have not attained my desire.
Youth has departed and I did not attain my wish
هِمَمٌambitions عنaway from الغرضthe goal المُحاوَلsought بُدِّلتْwere changed
هِمَمٌ عن الغرض المُحاوَل بُدِّلتْ
أمَلاًinto hope فَبدَّلَتِso they exchanged الكَرىslumber بسُهادِfor sleeplessness
أمَلاً فَبدَّلَتِ الكَرى بسُهادِ
Ambitions were turned from the goal they sought
Aims for the goal I struggled for were changed
Into hope, and so traded slumber for sleeplessness.
To a hope that fate exchanged for oblivion
سِيَّانِalike مُعْتلجُthe throes of الحِمامِdeath وحسْرةٌand a bitter regret
سِيَّانِ مُعْتلجُ الحِمامِ وحسْرةٌ
ضربتْhas struck وجوهَthe faces of العَزْمresolve بالأسْدادِwith barriers
ضربتْ وجوهَ العَزْم بالأسْدادِ
Alike are death's throes and a bitter regret
Indifferent is the passionate lover and sorrowful is he
That has thrust barriers in the face of resolve.
Who strikes the faces of resolve with misfortunes
إنَّindeed المَعاليlofty honors حالَhas stood دونَin the way of بُلوغِهاattaining them
إنَّ المَعالي حالَ دونَ بُلوغِها
عَدمُlack of الثَّراءِwealth وقِلَّةُand scarcity of الإِنْجادِaid
عَدمُ الثَّراءِ وقِلَّةُ الإِنْجادِ
Indeed, the attainment of high honors is barred
Indeed great deeds were hindered from reaching
By lack of wealth and scarcity of aid.
By lack of wealth and scarcity of support
فعلىso upon العراقِIraq كآبَةٌgloom منْfrom مُغْرَمٍone consumed by passion
فعلى العراقِ كآبَةٌ منْ مُغْرَمٍ
جعلhe made الضُّلوعَthe ribs ركائبَmounts for الأحْقادِgrudges
جعل الضُّلوعَ ركائبَ الأحْقادِ
So over Iraq hangs gloom from one consumed by passion,
So over Iraq is the gloom of a lover
Who has made his ribs mounts for grudges.
Who made the ribs platforms for grudges
يُبْديhe displays حَفائظَهُhis resentments وليسyet is not بحاصِلin possession
يُبْدي حَفائظَهُ وليس بحاصِل
إلاَّexcept علىof الإِبْراقِflashing lightning والإِرْعادِand thundering
إلاَّ على الإِبْراقِ والإِرْعادِ
He displays his resentments, yet gains
He discloses his innermost secrets but gains nothing
Nothing but lightning and thunder.
