إذا مدّ ملفوظ الظبي والجماجم

And an army like the necks of torrents—its flotsam,

When it surged, was cast-up sword-edges and skulls.

بعيدُ المدى لا صدرُ غور بمضمرٍ

سُطاةُ ولا قلبُ الظَّلامِ بكاتمِ

Far-ranging: no deep valley's breast can conceal

Its raiders, nor can the heart of darkness hide them.

إذا نصلت من صبغها لِمَّةُ الدُّجى

أعادَ عليها صيغَ أَغْبر قاتمِ

When night's locks lost their dye,

It dyed them anew a dark, dust-gray hue.

به كل هفافِ القميصِ مُقارعٍ

على كل محبوكٍ السِّراةِ ضبُارمِ

In it was every fighter with a fluttering tunic,

Upon every mighty, firm-backed steed.

أطلَّ على سِيفِ الفرات غدُيَّةً

وجِرْيتُها تحكي بطونَ الأراقمِ

It loomed over the Euphrates' bank one early morning,

While its current resembled the bellies of speckled serpents.

فغادرها حمراءَ يقذفُ ماؤها

غطارفَ شُوشاً في مكانِ العلاجمِ

So it left it red, its waters casting up

Tousle-haired nobles in place of frogs.

أرادَ ابتداري بالرَّدى فأجارني

أغرُّ طويلُ الباع من آلِ هاشمِ

أغرُّ طويلُ الباع من آلِ هاشمِ

It sought to rush upon me with death, but I was sheltered

By a radiant man of long reach from the House of Hashim.
