    I loved him, broad of mantle and rich in virtues,

    A noble man from whom both foe and poverty flee,

    طوْداً من الصَّبْر إذا الخطب ألَم

    At his fearsome might and overflowing generosity;

    A mountain of patience when calamity strikes,

    And a sharp, grooved sword when he resolves,

    Expert at striking armored men upon their heads.

    Until, when the sky grew dust-dark with drought,

    And its dusty haze darkened till it was pitch-black,

    And the clouds became scattered and divided,

    Dispersed like little flocks of sheep,

    No moisture from its dark cloud, nor any drizzle—

    The chief vizier made the fall of steady rains needless,

    And showered lowly men and hills alike

    With a copious downpour of blessings raining down.

    يرْهبُهث الفقر وتخشاهُ الإِزَمْ

    So the famine-stricken man was now in a vast, deep sea;

    Poverty fears him, and hardships dread him.

    His wealth is ample and abundant, no meager herd,

    Of high-humped camels and dark two-humped ones.

    The crown of kings and the refuge where safety is sought,

    Girded for action, he drives on the lines of his pen,

    As swift camels are driven by a harsh drover,

    Or short-legged sheep beaten with knotted acacia sticks.

    يُلْحقُ أحياءَ الكُفاةِ بالرِّمَمْ

    So his seat of office is like his warfare among champions:

    He reduces living men of skill to mouldering bones;

    All lie slain by his intellect and understanding.

    May he live obeyed as long as a landmark guides travelers.
