Do not mistake men's jesting for wit.

Indeed, jesting is the lesser form of verbal abuse.

قد يُحْقر الملكُ المُطاع ممازحاً

ويُهابُ سُوقيُّ الرجالِ الأوقرُ

ويُهابُ سُوقيُّ الرجالِ الأوقرُ

A king who is obeyed may be despised when jesting,

while the most dignified commoner is held in awe.
