And may you ever remain an ally of both kinds of health,
And still you swore both oaths wholly
obeyed, praiseworthy in your aim and its outcomes.
Obeyed, praised of purpose and consequences

ثقالُheavy الغواديmorning rainclouds أوor خِفافُlight القواضبِkeen-edged swords
For the enviers of your two virtues, renowned among mankind,
So my open superior merits' envious rival
are laden morning rainclouds or light, keen-edged swords.
Is either the heavy rumbling of torrents or the light rustling of pouring rain
فلاfor no سيفsword اِلاexcept وهوand it للعزمto resolve مُذْعنٌsubmissive

For no sword fails to submit to your resolve,
Thus no sword but submits to resolve
and no rain fails to attest to your lavish gifts.
No rainfall but witness to hopes

I lay awake in fear when you lay awake, and sometimes
I stayed alert lest you stayed alert and maybe
grim forebodings are worse than ailments.
The evil of misjudgment would harm the companions

And out of fear, I exchanged my courage for supplication,
And I changed my might from my caution to being
sustained by a flood of streaming tears.
Flooded by tears' stars that it shows

Whenever thought after thought assailed me,
If an idea creeps up after an idea
I tossed in anguish from side to side,
I toss and turn with worries side by side

like the mother of her one and only child, born in her old age,
Like a mother, alone with her only child after aging
who, in her anxious concern, believes every liar,
Believing, out of compassion, every liar

until the affliction lifted from a renowned man, in whom hopes rest,
Until there emerged, of hoped grace
whose house's pillar stands high, whose virtues are many,
The pillar of the house, perfect of superior traits

steadfast in great calamity, too proud for baseness,
Forbearing of glory, shunning lowliness
forbearing toward the gravest wrong, with gifts that bring delight:
Clement of loftiness, smooth of endowments

My father Ja'far, the caliphs' crown whereby
the horizon of glory brightened after deep darkness.
The horizon of glory shines after darkness

So thanks to him who, through his long life, has revived
So thanks to whom revived by his lifelong valor
the souls of hopes, both near and far.
Souls of hopes, both neighbor and outlying
