    May you remain obeyed as long as a dove sings,

    and as long as the darkening night is driven away by dawn.

    وحلمك للجاني وبأسُكَ للنَّصْر

    Your bounty is for the supplicant, and your house a sanctuary;

    and your forbearance for the offender, and your might for victory.

    For you are fertility while the lands are barren,

    and you are rain while the sky has not a drop.

    نسيم الصَّبا مرَّت على الرَّفْرفِ الخُضر

    And, by your gentle nature, when pleased you are

    an east-wind breeze passing over green cushions;

    مع السخط لا عن جور حكمٍ ولا شرِّ

    and a tempest scattering boulders and pebbles

    when angered, yet never from unjust judgment or malice;

    and a keen-edged sword in a brave man's hand,

    a wise man's—it cuts only for right and justice.

    And if bright swords and brown spears fear your daring,

    then fragrant breezes have envied you your scent.

    I see noble qualities in you, through even some of which

    a young man can attain and secure the honor of glory:

    modesty without cowardice, generosity without wealth,

    eminence without tyranny, dignity without arrogance.

    A minister with whom the guest and neighbor lodge,

    a radiant man, lavish in bounty, generous in character.

    When drizzle dims the fire on the heights,

    the radiance of his smile guides them to his blessings.

    My regular praises vied in abundance with the flow from his hand,

    so openhanded; the shortfall lay on poetry's side.

    Thus my eloquence began to complain of his lofty stature,

    though I brim with thoughts of gratitude,

    like a slow horse's complaint against a frontrunner's gallop,

    which flung dust into the slow one's face as it ran.

    O Abu Jaʿfar, crown of kings! I am only

    calling to the age's foremost man—nay, the age's glory.

    ننامُ كِلانا وهي واخِدةٌ تَسْري

    May the rhymes, dazzling in eloquence, gladden you;

    we both sleep while they stride swiftly through the night.

    When the praise-poets bring you fleeting verse,

    I bring what endures, immortal in fame and remembrance.

    And if they bring an alloy of copper to bounty,

    I bring to it pure, uncoined gold.
