طليقُ المُحيْا ضاربٌ في المَفارِقِ
And beneath the tall lances, while faces scowl,
And under the heights and the frowning faces
Cheerful of countenance, he strikes at the crowns of heads.
Free of expression, hitting the crossroads

القَطوعُ إذا ولَّتْ حُماةُ الحقائقِ
They called him Husam al-Din, 'Sword of the Faith,' and he is its sword—
Leave him the sword of religion, and it is his sword
The keen-cutting blade when honor’s defenders turn their backs.
The cutting off, when the protectors of truths dispersed

إذا جَنَّ ليلُ المأزقِ المُتَضايقِ
Deft in handling the reins and spears,
Able in manipulating the spears and the spears
When the night of the cramped battlefield closes in.
When the night of distress and straits comes

خميسُ وغىً جمُّ الظُّبى والسَّوابق
He leads the vast army, while he himself
He drags the Thursday donkey and he himself
Is a battle-host, rich in sword-edges and swift steeds.
Is a calamity of crammed folds and forelocks

Abu al-Faris, father of the ever-charging knight—yet such is his patience
Abu Al-Faras Al-Karrar but his softness
That every towering, ash-gray mountain has learned from it.
Every lofty and waving learned from it
