فَصيحٌ وودُّ النَّفْسِ بالغيبِ ناصِعُ
And when we met—praise, even in separation,
When we met and praise mingled with purpose
Was eloquent, and the soul's affection pure in absence—
An eloquent one whose soul longed for the unseen, radiant

The lightning of good tidings flashed from a glorious face
Its radiance shone in the splendor of morning.
Its brilliance gleaming in the grace of dawn

And Izz al-Din showed himself a man of perfect judgment,
The pride of religion expressed consummate guidance
Who had attained all glory while still young in years.
Bearing glory youthfully while in his prime

His speech delights you when he speaks,
You are pleased by his words when he speaks
And his understanding pleases you when he listens.
And satisfied by his understanding when he listens

And he is nothing but a sword: as for its watered pattern,
It is but a sword, its hilt may be an ornament
It is an ornament; and as for its edge, it cuts.
But its blade is cutting
