تأفَّفْتُI grumbled بالأيامِat the days ثمَّthen حمِدْتُهاI praised them
وبُدِّلَand was replaced وَعْرُthe rough terrain الحالِof my lot بالدَّمِثِwith soft ground السَّهْلِlevel
I chafed at the passing days, and then I praised them;
I grumbled at the days, then praised them;
the ruggedness of my lot was exchanged for soft, level ground.
and my lot's rough terrain was replaced with soft, level ground.

قَؤُوداًeasily led كماjust as سارَjourneyed المُحِبُّthe lover إلىtoward الوَصْلِunion with the beloved
My balking fortune became compliant toward me,
And my stubborn fortune became compliant,
easy to lead, as a lover goes toward union.
easy to lead, like a lover journeying toward union.
وماand not ذاكَthat إِلاَّexcept حينَwhen أصْبحتI became بعدماafter
لَقيتُI encountered الخُطوبَthe calamities الدُّهْمَdark جارَa neighbor of أبيAbu (father of) الفضْلal-Fadl (excellence)
That came about only when—after
And that was only when I became—after
meeting black calamities—I became Abu al-Fadl’s protégé.
facing dark calamities—a neighbor of Abu al-Fadl.
فَفَرَّقَso he scattered عنِّيaway from me النَّائباتِthe misfortunes بأسِهِhis might
وبالجودِand with generosity كالغيثِlike rain السَّحوحِpouring abundantly وكالنَّصْلِand like a blade
His might scattered the calamities away from me,
So he drove misfortunes away from me with his might
his bounty like copious rain, his might like a blade.
and with bounty—like pouring rain and like a blade.

So take refuge with Kamal al-Din, for his sanctuary
So seek refuge with Kamal al-Din, for his sanctuary
shields the protégé from the reversals of calamity and dearth.
is a refuge for his neighbor from misfortune's turns and drought.
ونَمْand sleep مُطْمَئناًat ease إِنْif ظَفِرْتَyou win بِوِدِّهِhis affection

فجارُfor the neighbor of الثُّرَيَّاthe Pleiades لاnot يُرَوَّعُis frightened بالنَّبْلِby arrows
And sleep secure, if you have won his affection;
And sleep at ease if you win his affection;
a neighbor of the Pleiades is not alarmed by arrows.
for the Pleiades' neighbor is not frightened by arrows.

And I shall surely repay him with every rare poem,
long-lived among reciters, immortal in transmission.
long-lived among reciters, forever handed down.
