    My two friends, my forbearance has deserted me,

    When she is recalled, and the heart trembles from [an unstated cause].

    ولكن هوىً بين الجوانح شاغِفُ

    Nor was I one whose composure could be shaken;

    But passion between my ribs pierces the heart.

    I kept company with my composure, at ease with aversion,

    And agreed with one whom my former self opposed over it.

    Then, when the cup of wine went round, there returned

    Love's calamities, through which desert wastes are folded away.

    And the tawny wine brought to mind—save for sweetness—

    Her lips' dusky hue, and what the lips praise.

    وخولِطَ ذو حزمٍ وهُيِّج آلف

    So fortitude was weakened, and a dignified man made light-headed;

    And a man of resolve was bewildered, and a devoted lover roused.

    So whether you grant me union or forsake me out of weariness,

    In either case I am lovesick and ready to oblige.

    Nor am I one to forgo visiting you at midmorning,

    Even if slender, blood-dripping spears screen you from me.

    When a sign of union appears to a lover,

    Then safest is the goal for which dangers are crossed.
