O Asad al-Din—and my call is to a zealous guardian,
The defender of faith and answerer to every call
whose domain is impregnable, whose bounty abundant,
The impregnable fortress, abundant in bounty,
كاشفdispeller of الأغْبرينِthe two dust-gray scourges حربٍwar وجدبٍand drought

who dispels the two dust-gray scourges, war and drought,
Dispeller of drought and war’s misery
between yellow-gold gifts and white blades;
Between the yellow sands and the white swords.

فالغُمودُso the sheaths الطُّلىthe necks بيومِon the day of النِّزالِcombat
and whose blade-edges loathe their sheaths—
He whom the cowards dislike in battle
for necks are their sheaths on the day of combat.
Yet the brave count on in the day of strife.

The noble chestnut steed arrived, despite
Noble Ashqar has come in your present state
the crushing burdens you bear,
Of terrible burdens and tribulations.

Generous and free in his giving
in bestowing it, without the humiliation of asking.
Without any humility or request.

So I sent forth praise, the fragrance of gardens
So I send forth this praise, to water the gardens,
rained upon in the mornings and evenings,
Drenched by early dew and late rains.

for a composed, steadfast man, sitting with knees clasped in peace,
For a dignified man, firmly allied in peace
and daring in war beneath the tall lances.
And bold at war beneath the banners.
