We brought the horses, their necks held high,

leveling the hillocks with their hooves,

at Aʿshash, while Bistam ibn Qays

deems holding back short of victory a disgrace.

So they brought the keen swords and long spears to drink

at the throats and heads of their men.

And at Dhat Kahf we indeed took captive

Abu Qabus, when he sought protection.

We struck his army with a crushing blow

that destroys the brave warrior and the keen-edged sword.

We left the dreaded al-Mundhir a tender maiden,

pouring torrents of tears in anguish.

What station of glory has not been attained

by our forebears, as we follow it with another?

And among us, after our departed one, is a vizier

whom the kings of the earth serve, standing in attendance.

When they kiss the fingertips of his hands,

those kisses upon his fingers become their protective bond.

And if they look upon his face, they fall silent,

then lower their gaze before him and shorten their speech.

As though they were weak birds beneath a hawk,

whose very appearance shows them death.

Graceful of bearing, radiant-faced, a Khindifi,

he deems withholding hospitality utterly forbidden.

In resolve, he is a fierce, raging gale,

and in forbearance, Radwa or Shamam.

And he becomes a north wind, softened to a breeze,

yet his moisture is that of the south wind.

And darkness thickens, in night and in fortune,

so he dispels it with bounty and a smile.

our cloud turns to scattered, rainless wisps.

And in him you find one peerless in lofty deeds,

and a vast army in his protective wrath.

When the Crown of Kings sets about a task,

he is not blameworthy, nor does he incur blame.

He fears God in safeguarding the subjects,

and sincerely counsels the Imam in his entrusted duty.

And his renown perfumes every gathering,

as though talk of him were the fragrance of lavender.

And the panegyrists' praise falls short of him,

so their eloquent speaker has not praised him fully.

And if they knew his inner secrets as I do,

each would become as love-struck as I am.
