اذاwhen ماemphatic particle سيلَhe is asked فيin جَدْبdrought أنالاhe gives
A cheerful-faced, mighty Hashimite,
The open-faced, most noble Hashimite
who gives when asked, even in drought.
If he pours forth in arid desolation

أجادَperfected القَيْنُthe smith صفحتَهits surface صِقالاpolishing
As though his brow were a Yemeni sword,
It's as if his forehead is a Yemeni sword
its surface polished to perfection by the smith.
Whose blade the whetstone has sharply honed
خلائقُهhis dispositions اذاwhen هيجتْare provoked ذُعافٌdeadly poison
وتضْحىand become فيin فُكاهتهِhis mirth زُلالاclear, sweet water
His nature, when provoked, is deadly poison,
When roused, his traits rush forth like storm-winds
and in his mirth turns to clear, sweet water.
And in his smiles, the morning dew appears
اذاwhen الأفكارُthoughts حارتْare baffled فيby مُلِمٍّa calamity
منfrom الحَدَثانِtime's vicissitudes جَلاَّهُhe dispels it ارْتجالاwithout preparation
When thoughts are baffled by a calamity
When thoughts in council spin about confused
from time's vicissitudes, he dispels it on the spot.
He frees them from the shackles of the new
غمامُa cloud ندىًof bounty اذاwhen الناديthe assembly حَواهُcontains him
وليثُand a lion وغىًof war اذاwhen شَهدَhe attends النَّزالاthe battle
A cloud of bounty when the assembly holds him,
A cloud of fragrant mist, if it's enclosed
and a lion of war when he joins battle.
Within the club, and lion-like at battle's scene

فأرْضىand so pleased المجدَglory وافْترعَand scaled القِلالاthe summits
His resolve shunned lowly pursuits,
His will rejects all base humility
thus pleasing glory and scaling the summits.
Content with glory, though of wealth bereft
شكرتكَI thanked you روضةًa meadow أُنُفاًfresh and ungrazed وكانتand it had been
مَداساًa trampling-ground للمناسِمِfor camels' footpads أوor مَجالاa roaming-ground
I thanked you with a fresh, untouched meadow, though it had been
I thanked a garden, gave it pride of place
a place trampled by camels' feet, or a ground for roaming.
And made it home to songbirds or parade
وكيفand how أُطيقُcan I bear صمْتاًsilence عنconcerning ثَناءٍpraise
وقدand indeed أوسَعْتنيyou have lavished upon me عِزّاًhonor ومالاand wealth
And how can I bear to withhold praise,
How can I stay silent, without praise
when you have lavished honor and wealth upon me?
When you have granted me such wealth and rank?
وقدand indeed بقيَremains المُهِمُّthe pressing matter فقلْso speak بَليغاًeloquently
ومِثْلُكَand one like you لاnot أعلِّمهُI teach him المَقالاwhat to say
And the pressing matter still remains, so speak eloquently;
The task remains, so speak with eloquence
and I need not teach one like you what to say.
The likes of you, I need not teach to talk
وقدand indeed ذهبتْhave gone بصبريwith my patience واجباتٌobligations
اِباءُpride النَّفْسِof the self يمنعُprevents أنْthat تُقالاthey be voiced
And obligations have carried off my patience,
Obligations have taken my patience
which my self-respect forbids me to voice.
The soul's distress prevents it being told
