وائِلواgo for refuge بيwith me إِلىto أغَرَّradiant; noble هِجانٍof pure lineage
وائِلوا بي إِلى أغَرَّ هِجانٍ
منfrom بنيthe sons of النَّضْرal-Naḍr يخْضِبُhe stains with blood المشرفيَّةْthe Mashrafī swords
من بني النَّضْر يخْضِبُ المشرفيَّةْ
Seek refuge with me in an illustrious, pure-bred lord—
Lead me to refuge with a radiant man of pure lineage,
one of Banū al-Naḍr, who stains Mashrafī blades with blood.

عندَهُhe has للنِّزالِfor combat والسَّلْمِand peace بأسٌmight
عندَهُ للنِّزالِ والسَّلْمِ بأسٌ
يابِسdry; unyielding فتْكُهhis deadly assault وكَفُّand a palm نَديَّهْdewy; generous
يابِس فتْكُه وكَفُّ نَديَّهْ
For combat and for peace alike, he possesses might:
For battle and peace he has strength—
unyielding is his deadly assault, while his palm is generous.
his blows harsh and dry, his hand moist with bounty.
يكتفيhe finds sufficient منfrom بديهةِthe spontaneity of القوْلِspeech عمَّاinstead of what
يكتفي من بديهةِ القوْلِ عمَّا
خَمَّرَتْهُhave ripened it أفكارُهhis thoughts والرَّويَّهْand deliberation
خَمَّرَتْهُ أفكارُه والرَّويَّهْ
The first inspiration of speech suffices him in place of what
He finds spontaneous speech sufficient, dispensing with
his thoughts and deliberate reflection have left to ferment.

عزْمهُhis resolve والتُّقيand piety اذاwhen هَمَّhe sets his mind بالأمْon the mat-

رِ-ter سِلاحٌa weapon وجُنَّةٌand protective armor سابريَّهْSābirī (a kind of mail)
رِ سِلاحٌ وجُنَّةٌ سابريَّهْ
His resolve and piety, whenever he sets his mind upon a mat—

مَ دَنيّاً فَشمْخةٌ هاشميَّهْ
He is gentle toward boon companions; but if he is made—

وبهِ في نَزالهِ خِضْرِمِيَّهْ
In forbearance he towers, a man of lofty plateaus;
In forbearance he stands lofty, with towering ridges,
and in combat his prowess has the vastness of the sea.
and in combat he has an ocean's boundless force.
