اذا لم أجدْ مُصغياً للحدي

ثِ حريصاً على فَسْرِهِ والبيانِ

ثِ حريصاً على فَسْرِهِ والبيانِ

If I find no attentive listener to the speech,

If I do not find a keen listener

eager for its interpretation and clarification,

Eager to interpret and explain

صمتُّ وصمتي اِذاً حكْمةٌ

صمتُّ وصمتي اِذاً حكْمةٌ

وكم حكمةٍ تحت صمتِ اللِّسانِ

وكم حكمةٍ تحت صمتِ اللِّسانِ

I fall silent, and then my silence is wisdom;

My silence then is wisdom

and how much wisdom lies beneath the tongue's silence!

And how much wisdom lies beneath the tongue's silence

فأطوي البَليدَ إِلى اللَوْذَ

فأطوي البَليدَ إِلى اللَوْذَ

عيِّ وأجزْي المُهينَ بمثل الهَوانِ

عيِّ وأجزْي المُهينَ بمثل الهَوانِ

So I pass over the dullard for the keen-witted,

So I fold away the uncaring one

and repay the scorner with like scorn.

Vigilant, and reward the degrader with the like degradation
