حمىmay protect اللهُGod اِقْبالاًIqbal حمايةَprotection دينهِHis religion
حمى اللهُ اِقْبالاً حمايةَ دينهِ
إِذاwhen أسْلَمَتabandon جارthe protégé of الملوكthe kings المعاقِلُthe strongholds
إِذا أسْلَمَت جار الملوك المعاقِلُ
May God protect Iqbal as He protects His religion,
May God protect Iqbal's zeal in guarding his faith
when strongholds abandon the kings’ protégé.
When the fortresses of neighbor kings have surrendered
فعندso with جمالJamal (beauty) الدولتينof the two states لِطالبٍfor a seeker
فعند جمال الدولتين لِطالبٍ
كرامُnoble نُهىًintellects موفورةٌabundant وفضائلُand virtues
كرامُ نُهىً موفورةٌ وفضائلُ
For with Jamal al-Dawlatayn a seeker finds
For seekers of beauty in the two states
noble wisdom in abundance, and virtues.
Abundant noble morals and virtues there are
إِذاwhen استنَّraces فيin الجدوىgenerosity وجدَّand hastens إلىtoward الحمىthe protected domain
إِذا استنَّ في الجدوى وجدَّ إلى الحمى
تمنَّىlong for مقاميْهِhis two stations الحيَاrain والمناصلand sword-blades
تمنَّى مقاميْهِ الحيَا والمناصل
When he races in generosity and hastens toward the protected domain,
If one is steadfast in purpose, one will find zeal for protection
rain and sword-blades long for his two stations.
And yearn for abodes of life and cutting blades
