وعنْand from عارٍdisgrace يُدَنِّسهُsullies him نِفارُaversion
He is serenely at home with glory,
He takes pride in glory, content and assured,
And recoils from disgrace that would sully him.
And abhors dishonor that would defile him.
فهَزَّامٌso a mighty vanquisher إذاwhen اشْتَجَرَclashed العَواليthe lofty spears
ومَهْزومٌand defeated إذاwhen ماemphatic particle عَنَّappears عارُdisgrace
So he routs foes when the lofty spears clash,
A conqueror when the highlands have clashed,
Yet is himself defeated whenever disgrace appears.
And defeated when honor has fled from him.

إذاwhen ماemphatic particle الليلُthe night أوضِحَwas made clear والنَّهارُand the day
The sun and the bright, night-roaming stars complain,
The sun complained and the blooming flowers
Whenever night and day are made clear:
When the night cleared and the dawn appeared.
فيسْتُرُthen veils كلَّevery لامِعَةٍgleaming light دُخانٌsmoke

ويكسِفُand eclipses كلَّevery مُشْرقةٍradiant light غُبارُdust
Then smoke veils every gleaming light,
Each shining thing is veiled in smoke,
And dust eclipses every radiant one.
And each radiant thing eclipsed by dust.

Just as his keen-edged swords are lamented
As his swords complained to the battlefields,
By battle's champions and high-humped she-camels heavy with young.
The piles of might and the combat gear.

إذاwhen بَخِلتْwere miserly بِدَرَّتِهاwith their milk-flow الغِزارُthe rich-milking she-camels
Lavish with gifts to those who seek his bounty,
He is forgiving to the one who pleads to him,
When rich-milking she-camels withhold their milk.
If the abundant rain has been stingy.
وفكَّاكُand a liberator العُناةِof captives بكُلِّin every أرْضٍland
إذاwhen ماemphatic particle حَبَّبَmade desirable الموْتَdeath الإِسارُcaptivity
And a liberator of captives in every land,
The liberator of captives in every land,
When captivity makes death desirable.
If death has made imprisonment preferable.
إذاwhen سَبَقَpreceded النَّوالَthe giving لديْهِwith him بِشْرٌgood cheer

تَعَقَّبَfollowed جَمَّabundant نائِلهِhis bounty اعْتِذارُan apology
When good cheer precedes his giving,
When bestowal precedes his right,
An apology follows his lavish bounty.
Regret pursues the gains of his seeker.

فقِسْمتُهُso his share غِشاشٌa brief doze أوْor غِرارُscant slumber
Thoughts of lofty deeds drive away his sleep,
The repulsion of lofty ideas wars against him,
So his share is a brief doze or scant slumber.
And his destiny divides him, deluded or fooled.
وَقاحُbrazen البأسِin battle ذوpossessed of وِدٍّaffection حَييٍّbashful
كأنَّas though صِفاتَهُhis qualities ماءٌwater ونارُand fire
Brazen in battle, yet bashful in affection,
Impudent in might, yet kind and cheerful,
As though his qualities were water and fire.
As if his traits are water and fire.

وباقيand the rest of اليومِthe day أمْرٌcommand وائْتِمارُand consultation
And his light fare sustains him morning and evening,
His gentleness acts for him,
While the rest of the day is command and counsel.
And the rest of his day is a matter of resolve.

فَطابَso was noble السَّعْيُthe striving منهُfrom him والنِّجارُand the lineage
He rose among the lofty branches of Tamim,
He crossed the dangerous roads of Tameem,
Thus noble were his endeavors and his lineage.
So the endeavor and the caravan were pleasant.

Firmly rooted mountains of forbearance,
Mountains, firmly settled
And, in times of drought, seas of bounty.
And at home, in endurance, seas.

بهامَةِover the head of كُلِّevery جَبَّارٍtyrant عِثارُa stumble
When they grow angry, the sleek, full-grown steeds
When they are angry, the coats of mail
Stumble over the head of every tyrant.
Are the ornament of each tyrant's ruin.

Adnan's eyes are gladdened by their glory,
Adnan is pleased with their glory,
And Nizar boasts of their endeavors.
And Nizār prides itself on their efforts.

They raised the Crown of Kings; and the morning rain-clouds
They grew the crown of kings, and for the valleys
Take pride in the rain they have lavished.
Pride in what poured from the rain.

Thus he came forth like the blade of an Indian sword,
Until there came one like an Indian sword,
Whose edge enhances the splendor of its sheen.
Adorning the splendor of its shine.

His two palms leave upon the lips of kings
At his feet, the mouths of kings
A fragrance from kisses in the assembly.
From kissing them in the assembly, perfumers.

Like drinkers, they bent over a watering place,
Like drinking from a bouquet they bowed down,
And no wooden bowl or small cup is passed around.
No ruggedness or harshness to be turned away.

The minister of goodness, Ahmad, possessor of lofty virtues,
The minister of goodness, Ahmed the Lofty,
And the one singled out among the sons of glory.
And who is he of the house of glory to be named?

So noble are you that all my elaboration is brief,
I honored you, so my prolixity and concision
And my lengthy praises of you are but abridgment.
And the length of my praises in you, a summary.

And my cares have not eclipsed the light of my merit,
My worries did not eclipse the light of my merit,
Nor does pure gold sicken from rust.
Nor does the brilliant rust flake away.
