    He turns away from evil and keeps clear of it,

    And toward good he shows boldness and resolve.

    فالصَّبرُ مُنتصرٌ والخطبُ مهزوم

    He pits trust in God against terrors as they rage;

    So patience is victorious, and calamity defeated.

    In his nature, anger never overcomes forbearance,

    Nor does he begrudge a cheerful face, even when careworn.

    He almost kisses people's hands out of generosity,

    While his sandal is kissed by the lips of proud lords.

    His affection is won, with no prior claim,

    By a brief encounter, and a greeting builds a bond.

    So no offense has power to breach a covenant,

    Ever; nor is affection torn down by turning away.

    A lover of noble deeds, a hater of all baseness,

    So glory is bound to him, and disgrace cut off.

    His weapons and the armored warrior in battle's dust,

    And wealth—all are wronged by his love of glory.

    والسيفُ مُنْثلِمٌ والرمح محطومُ

    So wealth is generosity's prey, and the brave warrior death's prey;

    And the sword is notched, and the spear shattered.

    فالزادُ والنَّومُ تَلْهينٌ وتهْويمُ

    His food and his sleep fall short of his needs;

    So provisions are but a light snack, and sleep but a doze.

    His supplicant's abode, through the bounty of his palm,

    Is a meadow drenched by downpours and sprinkled with drizzle before dawn.

    And his palm, while God's lands are drought-stricken,

    Is a dark, piled-up cloud pouring abundant water.

    So the caravan departs from the courtyards of his dwelling,

    And every gaunt mount is weighed down by the surfeit of rich pasture.

    He is the vizier, the radiance of whose brow

    Dispels the darkness of nights, dense and black though it is.

    فالضَّيف ذو ثروةٍ والجار معصوم

    The crown of kings and the protector of every oppressed person;

    So the guest has wealth, and the neighbor is protected.

    They said, "Abu Ja'far is a watering place for the thirsty."

    So I said, "Not every spring of water is Tasnim."

    He aided my patience against my fate; it was then confronted

    By an armored champion within me, fierce in battle and dauntless.

    And he spared me from people saying, "Alas!

    Merit like the midmorning sun, yet fortune pitch-black!"

    So may he live, wrapped in honor, as long as rises

    The sun, and thirst-maddened camels yearn for their watering places.
