حَمدْتُI praised إِلهيmy God مُخْلِصاًsincerely إذْwhen تَبَلَّجَتْcleared
غَياباتُdeep darkness ذاكَthat اللَّيْلِnight عنْfrom وَضحِbrightness الفَجْرِdawn
I praised my God sincerely when there parted
I thanked my God sincerely as the darknesses
the deep darkness of that night, revealing dawn's brightness.
Of that night gave way to the brightness of dawn.
وأيْقَنْتُand I knew for certain أنَّthat اللّهَGod ذاpossessor of العرشِthe Throne لمْdid not يُضِعْlet go to waste
دُعائيmy prayer وأنَّand that الكَسْرَbreaking يُعْقَبُis followed بالجَبْرِby mending
And I knew for certain that God, Lord of the Throne, had not let
And I knew that God on His throne did not neglect
my prayer go to waste, and that breaking is followed by mending.
My prayer, and that every loss is followed by gain.
فإنْso if يَكُbe صبريmy patience أحْرَضتنْيwasted me away هُمومُهُits cares
فَصبْريthen my patience الذيthat أفْضىled بنفسيwith my soul إلىto الشُّكْرِgratitude
So if the cares of my patience have wasted me away,
If worries embittered my patience,
then my patience is what brought my soul to gratitude.
My patience led me to gratitude.
حَمَىmay protect اللّهُGod نجْمَNajm (star) الدِّينِal-Din (of the faith) مُجْتمعَgathering-place العُلىglories
مَدَىthroughout الدَّهْرِtime والأيامand the days مِنfrom نِوَبِcalamities الدَّهرِtime
May God protect Najm al-Din, in whom all glories meet,
May God protect the star of faith and highest aspirations
for all time and all days, from time's calamities.
For all time, from the turns of fate.
فثَمَّfor there الحِمىthe sanctuary والمُرْهَفاتُand the keen-edged swords ذَليلَةٌhumbled
وثَمَّand there النَّدىbounty والغادِياتُand the morning clouds بِلاwithout قَطْرِrain
For there is sanctuary, while keen-edged swords are humbled,
So protection remains, and humbled are aggressions;
and there is bounty, while the morning clouds bring no rain.
So remains freshness, and gone are aridities.
