Is it a cloud's downpour, or a reproached man's bounty,
Is it a gathering cloud or a sad melody,
that made a pool and a valley flow with blessings?
That flows gently from the meadow asking for respite?

دُجىthe darkness الحظِّof fortune منfrom أيامناour days والليالياand the nights
The bountiful Artuqid rained forth; his lightning dispels
It aspires to ascend to generosity, its lightnings shine,
the darkness of fortune from our days and nights.
While the darkness of fate envelops our days and nights.

When his torrents surge from Mardin,
When floods burst forth from the mountains,
the caravan is left drowned, and wild beasts afloat.
The caravans drown and beasts wander astray.

It piled up for me until its surging flood bore me along,
For me, its difficulties accumulated until I was overwhelmed,
stirring my side toward glory, and stirring my rhymes.
Stirring my feelings for the heights and rhymes.

So I laid before my companions, from tales of his glory,
So I laid out to my companions the wonders of his glory,
marvels that make them forget the ages long past:
Strange tales that make past ages feel renewed.

praise for Husam, with a fragrance like
Songs of praise, as if their scent,
a lavender breeze coaxing the morning clouds to rain.
Is a summer breeze blowing through the valleys.

إِذاwhen راحset out at evening للعلياءِfor glory أصبحَwas at dawn غادياsetting out early
A wakeful, radiant man teaches it to the praise-singers;
They teach the eulogizer vigilant and lucid,
when he sets out at evening for glory, dawn finds him setting out.
When he sets out for the most high at dawn.

A young warrior whose horses, inward-eyed and lean in their reins,
A valiant horseman in the saddle of war, shaken
shake polished sword-edges and lofty lances.
Among polished swords and blades.

They turn dawn's first light to night, and shear away
He leaves the down of dawn at night and gets separated
the fine hair of heads flung aside, and forelocks.
From the forelocks of heads tossed about and sliced off.

When they turn away from a pool of water, he leads them,
When he turns away from the multitude of water, he leads them
and brings them to crimson water from skulls.
To water from springs that flows slowly.

He disdains treading the dust, and so with them he tramples
She disdains treading on the ground so he makes her
the crowns and necks of his enemies.
Leave her enemies and valleys behind.

إِذاwhen أكفأتْoverturned غُبْرُdust-grey السنينَthe years المَقارياthe guests' bowls
And what a fine haven for night visitors in hardship,
And excellent is the climate where the raiders camped
when dust-grey years overturn the bowls of hospitality!
When the dust of years covered the ruins.

The pale camels' necks stray amid lowlands and darkness,
The necks of lambs go astray in the darkness and gloom
so at evening his fires' glow becomes the camels' guide.
So their fires make the lambs fall asleep at night.

As though the dry winter among his homes
As if winter with its bareness amongst its houses
were a verdant spring that clothes bare rock.
Is like spring that makes the icy mountains green.

You are generous, and a trader among men profits
You were generous while profiting from the people,
when he buys the enduring with the perishable.
When you bought eternal goods with fleeting ones.
