And I shall indeed praise, as long as lightning flashes
Across a cloud's back, or a raincloud pours forth,

A youth of glory's choicest stock, just come of age:
The greatest nobles fall short of him.

He emulated his illustrious kin, the forebears of high renown,
And each is a leader, accomplished in noble virtues.

Then came Baha al-Din: as for his deeds,
They are an adornment; as for his face, it is radiant.

The keen edge of his resolve blunts Indian steel,
And shatters the spearpoints while the spears quiver.

And his bearing stays steady if the people's knee-bands fly loose,
And he is forbearing toward his enemies, though he has power.

His domain is impregnable; his guest cannot be harmed,
Even if the clans abandon him to death.

Nor do the days unravel his firmly bound pledge,
When treacherous days so often cast pledges aside.

Nor does he make those seeking bounty wait during drought,
Even if excuses are plain to the suppliants.

So may the month of fasting be congratulated on the noble man it has in him,
In whom his age—indeed, all time—takes pride.
