The swords of India long, amid battle’s fury—

the sword-polishers having already refined them for combat,

brandished in the hands of armored warriors, as though they were

    flashes of lightning kindled by rain-laden clouds;

when they gleam in the gloom of every dust cloud,

a torrent pours down from falling heads—

for noble ʿAḍud al-Dīn’s keenness and resolve,

when the bold, valiant warrior quails before calamity.

A young man of generosity and valor, fearsome to encounter,

when the two evils reveal themselves: terror and drought.

Then sound judgment and courage rout the might of war,

and generosity and bounty drive away the evil of drought.

Unyielding in strength: as for his domain, he defends it,

bestowing honor; as for his aid, he gives it freely.

He inherits lofty glory from every great forebear,

whose word is obeyed; and his endeavor excels and is noble.

So may the age whose festival is but part of its year be congratulated

on his reign, as long as a downpour makes grass grow.
