وبالذروةand at the summit الشمَّاءlofty منof موطنabode العُلىeminence
وبالذروة الشمَّاء من موطن العُلى
أغرُّradiant مهيبُawe-inspiring البأسmight تُرجىare hoped for فواضلهُhis bounties
أغرُّ مهيبُ البأس تُرجى فواضلهُ
And at the lofty summit of glory's abode
is a radiant man, awesome in might, whose bounties are hoped for.
بهin him اعتصمتit sought refuge والنجمُand the star يشهدُbears witness أنهاthat it
به اعتصمت والنجمُ يشهدُ أنها
تقومُstands مقامَin the place of النَّجمthe star حينwhen تُطاولُهُrivals it in height
تقومُ مقامَ النَّجم حين تُطاولُهُ
In him it found refuge; the star bears witness that it
takes the star's place when it rivals it in height.
أقامsettled بهاin it غَيْرانُjealously protective منfrom نجلٍoffspring أرْتقٍArtuq
أقام بها غَيْرانُ من نجلٍ أرْتقٍ
سجاياهُhis virtues منagainst صرفvicissitudes الزمانtime معاقلهُhis strongholds
سجاياهُ من صرف الزمان معاقلهُ
A zealous scion of Artuq settled there;
his virtues are his strongholds against time's vicissitudes.
إِذاwhen حَلَّdwells غوراًin a lowland فهوthen he قُنَّةُsummit شامخٍa towering mountain
إِذا حَلَّ غوراً فهو قُنَّةُ شامخٍ
وغَوْرٌand a lowland لديهbeside him باذخٌa lofty mountain اِذwhen يُنازلهْchallenges him
وغَوْرٌ لديه باذخٌ اِذ يُنازلهْ
When he dwells in a lowland, he is a towering mountain's summit,
and a lofty mountain is a lowland beside him when it challenges him.
وشيكswift القِرىhospitality لاnot يُشتكىis complained of بطءُdelay زادهhis food
وشيك القِرى لا يُشتكى بطءُ زاده
ولاand not تعلمُknow المحْلَfamine العميمَwidespread مراجلهْhis cauldrons
ولا تعلمُ المحْلَ العميمَ مراجلهْ
Swift in hospitality, no one complains of his food's delay,
and his cauldrons know no widespread famine.
إِذاwhen نَعتْannounce death ضيفانهُhis guests فشقيَّةٌthen ill-fated
إِذا نَعتْ ضيفانهُ فشقيَّةٌ
بِقُرِّin the chill of الدياجيdark nights نيبُهُhis aged she-camels ورواحلهْand his riding camels
بِقُرِّ الدياجي نيبُهُ ورواحلهْ
When his guests sound a death-knell, ill-fated are
his aged she-camels and riding camels in the chill of dark nights.
هوhe الخاضبthe one who stains العسَّالthe quivering spear منfrom نحرthroat قِرنهhis adversary
هو الخاضب العسَّال من نحر قِرنه
إِذاwhen النفعُgain ضلَّتwent astray فيin الطعانspear-thrusting عواسلهits quivering spears
إِذا النفعُ ضلَّت في الطعان عواسله
He stains the quivering spear with blood from his adversary's throat,
when gain's quivering spears go astray in the clash of spears.
يماطلُkeeps waiting بالماءِfor water المُباحِfreely available جِيادَهhis steeds
يماطلُ بالماءِ المُباحِ جِيادَه
وتنشرقُand choke منon ماءwater النُّحورthroats صواهلهْhis neighing steeds
وتنشرقُ من ماء النُّحور صواهلهْ
He keeps his steeds waiting for freely available water,
and his neighing steeds choke on the water of throats.
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle طوتforgo ورداًa drink شهيّاًtempting فوِرْدُهاthen their drink
إِذا ما طوت ورداً شهيّاً فوِرْدُها
غداةَon the morning of الوغىbattle نصرٌvictory كرامٌnoble مناهِلهْits watering-places
غداةَ الوغى نصرٌ كرامٌ مناهِلهْ
When they forgo a tempting drink, their drink
on the morning of battle is victory, whose watering-places are noble.
يُضيءshines ظلامdarkness الليلthe night والليلُand the night حالكٌpitch-black
يُضيء ظلام الليل والليلُ حالكٌ
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle حسامHusam (sword) الدينal-Din (the faith) عُدَّتْare recounted فضائلهْhis virtues
إِذا ما حسام الدين عُدَّتْ فضائلهْ
The darkness of night shines, though the night is pitch-black,
when Husam al-Din's virtues are recounted.
هُمامٌa valiant man يهابfears السيفthe sword حِدَّةَsharpness بأسهِhis might
هُمامٌ يهاب السيف حِدَّةَ بأسهِ
ويحسدهُand envies him دَرُّoutpouring الغَمامِthe clouds وحافِلهْand their brimming abundance
ويحسدهُ دَرُّ الغَمامِ وحافِلهْ
A valiant man: the sword fears the sharpness of his might,
and the clouds' outpouring and brimming abundance envy him.
