And indeed I resolutely conceal my sorrow,

Though in my heart it is like the points of spears.

And I deem desires unworthy of petition

Or reproach—they are too lowly and slight.

And when reason prescribes silence for me,

Another speaks, while my words remain unabased.

And the frenzy of resolve has been charmed away

By love for Shams al-Milla, exalted in rank.

    So whenever anger assails me,

Love rises over it, and it fades away.

He acts generously, without a word,

Without delay; and if he speaks, he acts.

His affection and the pledge, when he offers it,

Are free of any taint of excuse or weariness.

Whenever he is overwhelmed with reproach for his bounty,

Reproach increases his bounty in reply.
