    You have won them; the noble man wins richly.

    There is no shame in winning them, nor blame.

    Immortal through time, enduring,

    Ages and years renew them.

    Abiding at home, yet journeying,

    Tongues and pens spread them abroad.

    Their reciters are the West and the Hijaz together,

    And Persia, Iraq, and Syria.

    Praise-poems, radiant as the stars,

    They are guides to glory, beacons.

    فيكَ بها صَبْوَةٌ وتَهْيامُ

    And you have never ceased to be enamored of eminence;

    Within you are longing for it and consuming love.

    And people stay awake pursuing their aims,

    While all of them, confident, sleep soundly.

    You assumed their rule while the lands were barren,

    Dust-covered, their dawn all darkness.

    Then rugged uplands and plains alike grew fertile,

    Until desert waste and low valleys were alike.

    O ʿAdud al-Din, mainstay of faith and chivalry,

    And of kindness—noble deeds take many forms.

    أخْلَفَ نَوْءٌ وفَرَّ مِقْدامُ

    O knight of sleek steeds and bounty, when

    A rain-star fails its promise and a bold warrior flees;

    And you who, when you confront massed armies and poverty,

    Put army and destitution to flight.

    وهو لِدُرِّ السُّطورِ نَظَّامُ

    O scatterer of heads in his battles,

    While he strings the pearls of written lines;

    وماضياً والحُسامُ مِحْجامُ

    O weighty in judgment while minds are flighty,

    And resolute while the keen sword holds back;

    And deeming the world too little for his petitioner,

    He thinks it a rock-pool, though his bounty is a vast sea.

    Noble in his pledges, fresh in his friendship,

    Where men's affection is tattered rags.

    A greeting today, by his lofty standards,

    Is a covenant endowed with strength and firm binding.

    Steadfast in judgment, his resolve is not blunted,

    In seeking the heights, by unraveling or binding.

    May you endure forever for glory and eminence,

    As long as beneficence wins the gratitude of the noble.

    Indeed, my tongue, in which I take pride—

    Though it is a keen-edged, unbending sword—

    فهو عَييُّ الأداءِ تَمْتامُ

    Grows blunt in thanking you for what you have bestowed;

    So it is halting in expression, a stammerer.

    And how could a riding camel's waterskin contain

    A sea with surging swell and replenishment?
