O Abu Dulaf, if parting is cruel and there stands revealed
O Abū Dulaf, if my neighbor becomes estranged
a far-off separation after which no reunion is hoped for,
And turns away, after which no reunion can be hoped for,
فعنديthen I have وجْدٌanguish لاnot يُبرِّدُcools حرَّهُits heat

then within me is anguish whose heat is not cooled
Then in me is a passion whose heat cannot be cooled
by reproach, and tears no censure can restrain.
By blame or by tears that reproach cannot diminish.

ويملكنيand possesses me فيكfor you الغَرامُconsuming love اذاwhen أخْلوI am alone
My composure accommodates the ways of men,
I pretend to get along with men to hide my torment,
and consuming love for you possesses me when I am alone.
But love for you rules me whenever I am alone.

And I am bravest in the war against calamities, yet I
And though I am bold in the strife of adversity,
at your loss am drained of vital spirit, a weakling.
In yearning for you I am a weak, abject lover.
وانفدتُand I exhausted دمعthe tears of العينthe eye حتىuntil وددتُنيI wished that I
بكيتI had wept دماًblood منfrom لوعتيmy burning anguish ولكَand to you belongs الفضلُthe merit
And I exhausted my eye's tears, until I wished I
I have shed so many tears that I wish
had wept blood from my burning anguish—and yours is the merit.
I wept blood for my anguish, and you deserve the merit.
