مُحْمَدُpraiseworthy الأفْعالِdeeds موفورُabundant النُّهىwisdom
مُحْمَدُ الأفْعالِ موفورُ النُّهى
سابغُample النَّعْماءbounty عُلْويُّlofty الشِّيَمْcharacter traits
سابغُ النَّعْماء عُلْويُّ الشِّيَمْ
Praiseworthy in deeds, abundant in wisdom,
Muhammad, his deeds abundant, his prohibitions plenteous,
lavish in bounty, lofty in character.
His favors copious, his virtues sublime,
يلْمَعُshines البِشْرُcheerfulness علىupon أعْطافِهِhis shoulders
يلْمَعُ البِشْرُ على أعْطافِهِ
لَمَعانَthe flashing of البرْقِlightning فيin غُرِّthe bright الدِّيَمْsteady-rain clouds
لَمَعانَ البرْقِ في غُرِّ الدِّيَمْ
Cheerfulness shines upon his shoulders,
Faces shine in his presence,
like lightning flashing amid bright rain clouds.
Like lightning flashes in the darkness of night.
شامِخُtowering المَجْدglory مُنيفٌexalted قدْرُهُhis rank
شامِخُ المَجْد مُنيفٌ قدْرُهُ
راجِحُweighty الحَبْوَةِseated posture طيَّاشُswift-moving القلَمْthe pen
راجِحُ الحَبْوَةِ طيَّاشُ القلَمْ
Towering in glory, exalted in rank,
Lofty is his glory, exalted his worth,
grave in his seated bearing, swift of pen.
Skillful is his speech, prolific his pen,
باسِلٌvaliant إِنْif نَزلَbefalls الخطبُcalamity حَمىhe defends
باسِلٌ إِنْ نَزلَ الخطبُ حَمى
قائلٌa speaker إِنْif جادَلَhe debates اللُّدَّthe obstinate خَصَمْhe prevails in argument
قائلٌ إِنْ جادَلَ اللُّدَّ خَصَمْ
Valiant: when calamity strikes, he defends;
Valiant if calamities descend,
a speaker who, when he debates the obstinate, prevails.
Articulate if adversaries contend.
نازِحٌfar removed عنfrom موْطِنِthe abode of العارِshame لهُfor him
نازِحٌ عن موْطِنِ العارِ لهُ
مَوْطنُthe abode of العَلْياءِeminence والمَجْدِand glory أمَمْnear
مَوْطنُ العَلْياءِ والمَجْدِ أمَمْ
Far from the abode of shame; for him
Shunning the abode of disgrace, his place
the abode of eminence and glory lies near.
The abode of the noble and glory always,
هوhe طَوْدٌa lofty mountain راسِخٌfirmly rooted فيin حِلْمِهِhis forbearance
هو طَوْدٌ راسِخٌ في حِلْمِهِ
وتأنِّيهِand his deliberation وسَيْفٌand a sword إِنْif عَزَمْhe resolves
وتأنِّيهِ وسَيْفٌ إِنْ عَزَمْ
He is a mountain, rooted fast in his forbearance
He is a towering mountain in his patience
and his deliberation, and a sword when he resolves.
And composure, a sword if he is resolved.
يخْجلُis ashamed النَّجْمُthe star علىdespite رِفْعَتِهِits height
يخْجلُ النَّجْمُ على رِفْعَتِهِ
منbefore أبيAbu (father of) جعفرٍJa‘far العاليlofty in الهِمَمْaspirations
من أبي جعفرٍ العالي الهِمَمْ
The star, despite its height, is put to shame
The stars are humbled by his loftiness,
before Abu Ja‘far, whose aspirations are lofty.
Before Abu Ja'far the high-aspiring,
ويَوَدُّand longs الصُّبْحُdawn مِنْfrom لألآئهِhis radiance
ويَوَدُّ الصُّبْحُ مِنْ لألآئهِ
لمْعَةًa gleam تُؤمِنُهُkeeps it safe جُنْحَthe onset of الظُّلَمْdarkness
لمْعَةً تُؤمِنُهُ جُنْحَ الظُّلَمْ
And dawn longs to draw from his radiance
And dawn wishes from his brilliance
a gleam to keep it safe at the onset of darkness.
A radiance to banish the wings of darkness.
ياO وزيراًminister مُلِئَتْwere filled ساعاتُهُhis hours
يا وزيراً مُلِئَتْ ساعاتُهُ
للوَغىfor warfare والجدْبِand drought بأساًvalor وكَرَمْand generosity
للوَغى والجدْبِ بأساً وكَرَمْ
O minister, whose hours are filled
O minister whose hours were filled
with valor in war and generosity in drought,
With clamor and dearth, valor and generosity!
والذيand who يُخْبِتُhumbles himself للّهِbefore God إذاwhen
والذي يُخْبِتُ للّهِ إذا
نالَattains مَسْعاهُhis striving مَحلاًّa station لمْnot يُرَمْsought
نالَ مَسْعاهُ مَحلاًّ لمْ يُرَمْ
and who humbles himself before God when
He who prays devoutly to God, if
his striving attains a station never sought:
His ambitions are fulfilled, is never cast down.
هُنِّيءَmay be congratulated الصَّومُthe fast وماand what يُعْقِبُهُfollows it
هُنِّيءَ الصَّومُ وما يُعْقِبُهُ
أبداًforever ماso long as أرْشَدَguides السَّفْرَthe travelers عَلَمْa landmark
أبداً ما أرْشَدَ السَّفْرَ عَلَمْ
May the fast and what follows it be congratulated
Happy the fast and what follows it,
forever, so long as a landmark guides travelers,
Which guided the journey of the standard forever.
بِكَon your presence فيin طُولِlength of بَقاءٍlife آمِنٍsecure
بِكَ في طُولِ بَقاءٍ آمِنٍ
دونَهُbefore it الحادثُcalamity أعْمىblind وأصَمْand deaf
دونَهُ الحادثُ أعْمى وأصَمْ
on your presence throughout a long, secure life,
Through you in lengthy survival secure,
before which calamity is blind and deaf.
Beyond it misfortune, blind and deaf.
