This is the pool; around it, befitting its glory,

are knights’ playing fields in place of gardens.

The horses gallop with armored warriors, as though they were

the thin-coated wolves of the wastes and swooping eagles.

Among them is one with a ball, wheeling on his steed,

and a combatant with an Indian-steel sword and a spearhead,

and one rousing wild game, which his arrows take unawares,

who has left the gazelles like rival combatants.

Delights that make enjoyment complete, and a gathering

whose gladness has dispelled the darkness of sorrows.

So seize the favor of the nights, and hasten to

their pleasures; and hold fast to doing good.
