ومَاand not فكّرتَyou thought وَيْحَكَalas for you فيabout مآلِكْyour final end
You have wasted your life setting your affairs in order,
You wasted your life trying to improve your state,
and never thought—alas for you—of your final end.
Yet never thought, alas, about your final fate.
أراكَI see you أَمِنتَyou felt safe from أحداثَcalamities اللَّياليthe nights
وقَدْand already صَمدتْthey aimed لِغَدرِكَat betraying you واغتيالِكْand slaying you by stealth
I see you feeling safe from the calamities of the nights,
I see you felt secure from the nights' events,
though they have set out to betray and slay you by stealth.
Though they conspired against you for your punishment.
ومِلْتَand you inclined لِزخْرفِtoward the glitter of الدّنياthe world غروراًin delusion
وقدand already جاءتْshe came تسيرُmarching إلىtoward قِتالكfighting you
And, deluded, you leaned toward the world's glitter,
You were infatuated with the world's vanities,
while she came marching out to fight you.
Yet it approaches now to fight against you.
وكَمْand how often أتعتبَyou wearied بالآمالwith hopes قلباًa heart

And how often have you wearied a heart with hopes,
How often a heart hoped with dreams,
making it bear more than you can endure.
Bearing more than it could withstand.
ولَمْand not يكُنِwas الذيwhat أمَّلْتَyou hoped for فيهاin her

And what you hoped for in her was not
What you wished for was not
swifter than your passing and departure.
Faster than your demise and departure.

So live in her, lean of belly, and work
So live frugally and work
for a day when you will be oblivious to your dependents.
For a day when you will be distraught over your family.

ولاand not تدريyou know يمنَكyour right مِنfrom شِمالِكْyour left
You will come to it submissive and abased,
You will come to it humiliated and subdued,
and you will not know your right from your left.
Not knowing whether from your right or your left.

فَهَلاّso why not مِلْتَyou turned عَنهاaway from her فيin اكْتهالِكْyour middle age
Toward her you leaned in your youth, in ignorance;
In your youth, you were ignorantly infatuated with it,
so why not turn away from her in your middle age?
So why not become disinterested with aging?
فَمَهْلاًso hold back فهيَfor she عندin the sight of اللهِGod أَدْنَىlower
وأهْونُand more worthless مِنthan ترابٍdust فيin نعالِكْyour sandals
So hold back: in God's sight she is baser
Wait, for it is insignificant to God
and more worthless than the dust in your sandals.
And lighter than dust on your shoes.
وإِنْand if جاءَتْكَshe comes to you خاطبةًas a suitor فأعرِضْthen turn away

وقُلْand say مَهْلاًhold back فماfor not أناI مِنْamong رجالِكْyour men
And if she comes to you as a suitor, turn away,
If it comes to you asking for marriage, turn away
and say: Hold back, for I am not one of your men.
And say, wait, for I am not one of your men.

You adorn yourself for me, to deceive me;
You adorned yourself to deceive me,
for I have seen nothing uglier than your beauty.
Yet I saw nothing uglier than your beauty.

Indeed, if you were shade upon the sun-scorched ground,
If only you were a shade in the hot sun,
then I would never turn toward your shade.
Then I would have never stopped seeking your shade.

Continue forsaking me as you wish, for I
Keep your estrangement as long as you wish, for I am content
have accepted lifelong estrangement instead of union with you.
With a lifetime of separation from your company.

For the arrows of Thuʿal, when
Nobility is not in loosely shooting arrows
they shoot one day, are no deadlier than your arrows.
That one day aim haphazardly with your bow.

Your forbidden things entail punishment for mortals
Your unlawful acts bring punishment upon the people
for indulging in them; your lawful things entail a reckoning.
And you will be held accountable for your lawful acts.

For those among her children who lived before you—
The fading of those before you indicates
their passing points to your passing.
That you too will inevitably fade.

And how many kingdoms and buildings they raised!
How many kingdoms and buildings they erected,
So where do you see the buildings and kingdoms?
Yet where are their buildings and kingdoms now?

And you, if you understand, are bound to depart;
When you are reasonable about your departure,
so begin gathering your provisions for your departure.
Prepare provisions for your journey.

And leave the paths of error to those who seek them,
Leave the ways of misguidance sought by its people,
for the paths of truth are plain to follow.
For the ways of truth are clear paths.

How long, and to what end—alas for you—this youthful affectation?
Why this obstinacy and straying in your confusion?
And how long this feigned ignorance in your straying?
How long will this self-deception persist?

Awake! Your life has already run its course.
Wake up! Your life is over,
So turn aside, and count yourself among the perished.
So count and evaluate yourself during calamities.

And reproach yourself for your negligence, and see
which path you have come to walk.
What path have you started walking?

Tell me, what will you say on the Day of Calling
answer will you give the Guardian when you are questioned?
When the Supreme questions you about your deeds?

What excuse will you give
when they unroll your book of deeds?
When they unfold your record of misdeeds?

So fear your Lord in solitude, and cry out
So fear your Master in solitude and beseech
to Him with your sobbing and supplication.
Him with your lamentation and supplication.

And heed His command in every circumstance;
Be mindful of His command always,
at the Resurrection, your distress will be relieved.
And He will relieve your difficult state on Judgment Day.

And do not incline toward disobedience, lest you be driven
Do not incline towards disobedience, which will lead
into a pitch-dark night of sorrows.
Your state into a night of sorrows.

And if you are afflicted by some matter, be patient;
And if you are afflicted with something, then be patient,
perhaps God will bring about a change after that.
Perhaps God will bring about relief after that.

For many a calamity was bitter, and passed
For many a calamity has passed you,
over you as though it had never crossed your mind.
As if it never touched you at all.

How much adversity has refined you
and the nights polished you to perfection.
And the nights have perfected your mettle!
