You have possessed a heart into which reproach cannot enter.

So whenever mention of anyone but you passes, it has no sweetness.

Every idle person rebukes me for loving you,

and love for you keeps me too occupied for their reproach.

And what good can reproach possibly do in love

for one who has neither sense nor reason in love?

Even if, in ignorance, they demand that I forget,

then loving you is, to me, duty and transmitted tradition.

Shall I forget, when no hue of gray hair upon my cheek

yet shows, nor has the hue of youth faded?

Were it for anyone but you, people of Muhammad's House,

that I felt passion, turning away would, to me, be justice itself.

I carried love for you in the days of my youth,

when I was a child and passion for you was a child.

So, you who reproach me for loving Muhammad's family,

go gently: I shall never cease loving them.

Shall I forsake love for a people whose election

and preeminence among mankind reason and transmitted tradition have affirmed?

    Those are the Prophet Muhammad's edifice;

so say what you wish of them: you will not exaggerate.

Lofty branches, whose root is the master of mankind

and Haydara—how splendid the branch and the root!

They gave their lives to make their father's religion manifest,

nobly, with neither cowardice nor miserliness among them.

To God I complain of a band who have acted unjustly

against them, embraced falsehoods, and offered excuses.

They seek to extinguish the lights of their excellence,

yet the lights of their excellence have never ceased to rise.

And after Ahmad they denied, concerning him,

an explicit declaration that reason does not deny.

And the Chosen One, Taha, had proclaimed his renown,

and told them, 'This is the successor and the kinsman.'

And he vested him, on the day of Ghadir, with authority

over all creation, never to be deposed.

    ولو لم يكن نصَّاً لقدَّمه الفضلُ

    And he explicitly designated him for the imamate, not them;

and even without an explicit designation, merit would have placed him first.

Is he not his brother, and the one who aided him with his own life,

when cavalry and infantry met on the day of battle?

Was he not the nearest of them to him in kinship,

and the most learned among them when ignorance grew great?

Was he not the most faithful of them whenever he gave a pledge,

and the most forbearing of them when the sandal slipped?

And the most eloquent of them in disputes, and the best of them

in giving, whenever his abundant bounty was looked for?

They argue against God's helpers, saying, 'We

are his kin; through us the bond with him is joined.'

Were the Companions nearer in kinship,

and closer by blood—if you understood—or was the household?

And after the Prophet Muhammad, they took

from his two daughters what he had previously bestowed on her.

They conspired against her, usurping her right,

and said, 'God forbid that the messengers leave an inheritance!'

    وكيفَ يصحّ الفرعُ والأصل مُختَلّ

    And their ruling in that is, without doubt, invalid;

how can the branch be sound when the root is unsound?

Is not the Commander of the Faithful the one

who alone among them holds the power to bind and loose in this?

And they killed lords of Ahmad's household,

noble men through whom harm and hardship are warded off.

They watered every land with blood from their necks

and their followers', until rugged ground and plain drank their fill.

So be patient, sons of the Chosen One: before us

lies a tribunal of justice, where merit will be determined.

    إذَا ما انْبرى يوماً يحاذرهُ النَّصْلُ

    And for whoever opposes you, I have a tongue's blade;

when, on any day, it sallies forth, a sword blade fears it.
