You broke my pledge and covenant after separation,

and I slept, heedless of the fire of my sorrows and my longings.

And you were my best companion, but you turned, together with

the days, to striving to wrong and oppress me.

Who, then, can soothe the fire of longing you have kindled

in passionate anguish, and the sickness of parting that has no healer?

I think my absence from you has changed what

I knew of your noble qualities and character.

O breaker of the bond of my pledge, I shall forever,

as long as I live, remain true to love's covenant.

For God's sake, have mercy on a liver that yearns for you—if

I could, I would enclose it in my letters and papers—

and on a heart cleft by the sword of parting,

within which love's wars rage in full fury.

May I never glimpse the lightning of nearness to you if

my eyes taste sleep before your return.

Nor may I enjoy union if I keep company with anything but

longing and tears poured over both cheeks.

Now that you have gone from me, I shall no longer be frightened

    by Time's thunder and lightning.

So let Time do whatever its calamities wish:

for what else could I face after separation?
