الأنبياthe prophets خيرَthe best وصِيِّsuccessor
الأنبيا خيرَ وصِيِّ
Whom do you deem, after the best
Who do you see after the best
of the prophets, the best successor?

مَنْwho تُرىone wonders ولاّهappointed him خيرthe best
مَنْ تُرى ولاّه خير
الرُّسْلِthe messengers عنْat أمرِthe command of العليِّthe Most High

فتىًa youth غيرother than عَليّʿAlī
فتىً غير عَليّ

أَبهِwas it by him? الملّةthe faith حيطَتْwas safeguarded

أمor بتَيْمٍby Taym وعديِّand ʿAdī
أم بتَيْمٍ وعديِّ
Was the faith safeguarded by him,
O you whose doctrine surrounded
or by Taym and ʿAdī?

قُلْsay لَناto us فالأمْرُfor the matter إنْif
قُلْ لَنا فالأمْرُ إنْ
أَنْصفتَنَاyou are fair to us غيرُnot خَفيِّobscure
أَنْصفتَنَا غيرُ خَفيِّ
