ياO طلعةَcountenance of القمرthe moon المنيرthe shining
يا طلعةَ القمر المنير
ياO قامةَstature of الغُصنِthe bough النَّصيرِthe supporting one
يا قامةَ الغُصنِ النَّصيرِ
O countenance of the shining moon,
O rising moon so bright
O stature of the supporting bough,
O slender branch upright
ياO جَنّةَparadise of الخُلدِeternity الّتيwhich
يا جَنّةَ الخُلدِ الّتي
تَركتْleft فُؤاديmy heart فيin السَّعيرِthe blazing fire
تَركتْ فُؤادي في السَّعيرِ
O paradise of eternity, which
O eternal paradise
Left my heart in the blazing fire.
That left my heart aflame
ياO مَنْone who يجلُّis exalted عَنِbeyond المشاthe like (word begins here)
يا مَنْ يجلُّ عَنِ المشا
بهِcompletion of 'the like' والمماثلِand the equal والنّظيرِand the peer
بهِ والمماثلِ والنّظيرِ
O you exalted beyond any likeness,
O peerless one I see
Any equal or peer.
Beyond all likeness he
ياO آسرِيmy captor فيin حُبِّهِlove for him
يا آسرِي في حُبِّهِ
هَلْis there منany فكاكٍrelease للأسيرfor the captive
هَلْ من فكاكٍ للأسير
O my captor through love for him,
O captor of my soul
Is there any release for the captive?
Is there escape I pray
أودَىdestroyed بعزمwith the resolve of تجلّديmy endurance
أودَى بعزم تجلّدي
ماthat which فيin لحاظِكَyour glances منof فتورِlanguor
ما في لحاظِكَ من فتورِ
My resolve to endure was undone
With staunch resolve and might
By the languor in your glances.
I'll bear your coyness slight
يومٌa day تكونُyou are بهon it لَدَيَّwith me
يومٌ تكونُ به لَدَيَّ
يتمّbecomes complete ليfor me فيهِon it سروريmy joy
يتمّ لي فيهِ سروري
A day when you are with me—
One day with you I'll be
On that day, my joy is complete.
And joy shall be complete
وأقولand I say ياO يومday of اللّقاreunion
وأقول يا يوم اللّقا
عُمّرتَmay you be long-lived منas يومٍa day قصيرِshort
عُمّرتَ من يومٍ قصيرِ
And I say: O day of reunion,
That day we two shall meet
May you be long-lived, short day that you are!
