Now, when solace and fortitude are spent,

so lessen your estrangement—desist, and show restraint.

You said, 'We have borne a passion that cannot be endured

by the mountains of Radwa, nor withstood by Uhud.'

You say this, though your breasts have never felt

more than a fraction of the yearning I feel.

Nor has heartache kindled a fire within your ribs,

while in my ribs the blaze of longing burns.

Nor has sleep forsaken your eyes in my absence,

while my eye, since you left, has been ruined by sleeplessness.

Nor have your tears ever flowed over separation,

while my tears flow endlessly down my cheek.

What, then, is my plight, when my passion at every moment

feeds my longing, while my patience has nothing to sustain it?
