عينايَmy two eyes فيكَfor you بأسيافby the swords of البُكىweeping اجْترحاwere wounded
هذاthis وماand did not اقتَرَفاthey both commit ذنباًa sin ولاnor اجْتَرحاdo wrong
My two eyes, for you, were wounded by the swords of weeping.
My eyes shed tears of sorrow for you
This, though they committed no sin and did no wrong.
Though they've committed no sin or wrong
ياO مَنyou who رأيتI found الهوىlove منfor أجلهhis sake حَسَناًbeautiful
فيهin him ولوand even if أنّهthat it فيin غيرهsomeone other than him قَبُحاbecame ugly
O you for whose sake I found love beautiful,
O you whom love seemed beautiful for
In you, though in anyone else it would be ugly.
Even if in another it'd be ugly
ومنand you who حوىpossessed الحُسنَbeauty دونto the exclusion of الخلقall creation عنin كملٍfullness
حتىuntil غداbecame كيفjust as شاءwished الحسنُBeauty واقتراحاand chose (reading واقترحا)
And you who alone, of all creation, possessed beauty in full,
You who contained perfection beyond all
Until you became just as Beauty wished and chose.
Till beauty became as you wished and designed
ماwhat ضرّharm would it do لوif سمحgenerously granted المولىthe master بزورتهwith his visit
لمغرمto a lovesick lover فيin الهوىlove بالروحwith the soul قدalready سمحاgave freely
What harm would it do if my lord granted a visit
No harm if the Master allowed a visit
To a lovesick lover who has freely given his soul in love?
To a lovesick soul who wholly resigned
أضلَّled astray وجهكyour face حُساديmy enviers عَدمتُهمُmay I be rid of them
حتّىuntil رأوهthey saw it هلالاًa crescent moon وهوwhile it is شمسthe sun of ضُحىmidmorning
Your face led my enviers astray—may I be rid of them—
Your beauty enviers tried to hide
Until they saw it as a crescent, though it is the midmorning sun.
They saw a crescent, but it was dawn's sunshine
واللهِby God لوif أنّthat حُساديmy enviers إذنْthen نظرواthey beheld
أثيلَluxuriant فرعكَyour locks بأنbecame clear (reading بان) الفرقُthe difference واتّضحاand became plain
By God, had my enviers then beheld
By God if my enviers could but see
Your luxuriant locks, the difference would have become clear and plain.
Your branch's peak, the difference would shine
زِدْincrease خاطريmy mind شرراًsparks أوor ناظريmy eye سَهراsleeplessness
وزِدand increase عظاميmy bones نحولاًwasting والحَشاand the breast برحاanguish
Add sparks to my mind, or sleeplessness to my eye,
Add to my soul more sparks or sleeplessness to my eyes
And add wasting to my bones, and anguish to my breast.
And to my bones, more emaciation and bewilderment
أناI الّذيwho ماdid not شكَاcomplain of ثِقْلthe burden of الهوىlove أبداever

ولاnor أصاخlistened لِلاَحِto a reprover فيكَconcerning you حينwhen لحَاhe reproached
I am the one who never complained of love’s burden,
I who never complained of love's heaviness
Nor heeded a reprover concerning you when he reproached me.
Nor moaned when it flamed, keeping silent restraint
