أصخْlisten attentively لِشكيّتيto my complaint وارفقْand be gentle
بجسْمٍwith a body فيكَfor love of you قَدalready نحلاwasted away
Listen to my complaint, and be gentle
Listen to my complaint, and be gentle
With a body that, for your sake, has grown gaunt.
With a body that has wasted away for love of you.
وقلْand tell ليme منwho أحلَّmade lawful دَميmy blood
ومنand who ذاis it that حرّمَforbade القُبَلاَthe kisses
And tell me: who declared my blood lawful?
And tell me who made my blood lawful to shed,
And who is it that forbade kisses?
And who it was that forbade kisses.
وإنْand if تنكرْyou deny ضنيthe wasting of جسَديmy body
ولمand have not تعطِفْturned compassionately عليّtoward me ولاaffection
And if you deny my body’s wasting
And if you deny my body's wasting,
And do not soften toward me, nor—
And have not turned toward me with affection,
فكفّthen restrain النّبلthe arrows مِنْfrom عينيكَyour two eyes
يكفيis enough بعضُsome of ماwhat فَعَلاَthe two did
Then hold back the arrows from your eyes;
Then hold back the arrows from your eyes:
Some of what those two have done is enough.
Some of what they have done is enough.
ولاand let not تُطلِعْreveal لَنَاto us خَدَّاكyour two cheeks
وردَroses رِياضِهاher/its gardens الخَضِلاَdew-fresh
And do not show us your cheeks—
And let not your cheeks reveal to us
The roses of their dew-drenched gardens.
The dew-fresh roses of their gardens.
