I marveled at al-Faʿlāʾ, borne onward to the camel-drivers’ chant,

to war against the best of the legatees on exhausted camels.

She came galloping toward him, her saddle thronged

by men going forth and returning, engaged in their deeds.

Though she had been commanded not to leave her house,

she set out to fight the champions of war.

Even the dogs rebuke her for her deed,

and she is counseled—if counsel could do any good there.

How astonishing, then, are those who commend her deed,

when even the barking dogs have reproached her.
