أَنَا مَنْ إذا سمعَ الورى
غَزَليmy love poetry الرقيقَtender وماand what حَوَىit contained
غَزَلي الرقيقَ وما حَوَى
I am he of whom, when people hear
I am one who, when the people hear
my tender love poetry and what it holds,
My gentle verse and what it bears,
قالواthey said أجادَhe excelled وماand did not درواthey knew
قالوا أجادَ وما دروا
أنّيthat I نطقتُI spoke عنِout of الهوىlove
أنّي نطقتُ عنِ الهوى
they say, “He has excelled,” not knowing
They say, “Well done!” But do not know
that I spoke out of love.
That I speak only from desire.
