كيفَhow لاnot أُبْديI reveal شجونيmy sorrows وأنوحُand I wail
كيفَhow لاnot أغْدوI go out in the morning كَئيباًsorrowful وأروحُand I return in the evening
How can I not reveal my sorrows and wail?
How can I not express my sorrows and lament
How can I not be sorrowful morning and evening?
How can I not become despondent and forlorn
كيفَhow لاnot تهْجرُforsake عينايَmy eyes الكَرىsleep
كيفَhow لاnot تجريflow دموعيmy tears وتسيحُand stream
How can my eyes not forsake sleep?
How can my tearful eyes not abandon me
How can my tears not flow and stream?
How can my tears not flow and sweep down
بَعْدَمَاafter ضمّتكenfolded you أطباقُlayers الثّرىthe earth
وتغشّاكand shrouded you علىagainst رغْميmy will الضّريحُthe grave
After the layers of earth have enfolded you,
After the earth has embraced you in its layers
and the grave has shrouded you against my will.
And the grave has covered you despite my agony

O my counselor, do not blame me for weeping.
O my advisor, do not blame me for crying
Your deceit in this has become clear to me, O counselor.
For your loss to me has become evident, O advisor

Do not seek patience from me after his loss;
Do not expect me to be patient after it
for my patience at Jamil's loss is ugly indeed.
My patience for a beautiful one is ugly

O beloved, grief for you has made me ill,
O my beloved, his sadness made me ill
and my heart holds true affection for you.
And for him is sincere love in my heart
هَلْis there? لِطرفيfor my eye منكَof you يوماًone day نظرةٌa glimpse

Might my eye one day catch a glimpse of you,
Will I ever get a glance from you
long enough for the wounded heart to heal?
Until the wounded heart is mended
