أمولايO my lord لاdo not تجزعlose heart إذاwhen عضكit bites you الدَّهرTime
وصبراًand be patient فإنfor indeed الحُرّthe noble man شيمتُهhis nature الصبرُpatience
O my lord, do not lose heart when Time bites you.
And be patient, for patience is the noble man's nature.
مَتىwhen أبصرتhave seen عيناكyour two eyes فيon الأرضthe earth ماجداًan illustrious man
أديباًcultured لهhe has نهيٌa prohibition عنagainst الدَّهرTime أوor أمرُa command
When have your eyes seen on earth an illustrious man,
cultured, with power to restrain Time or command it?
وكمand how often قبلكbefore you الأيامُthe days قدindeed غدرتdealt treacherously بناwith us
ولمand have not تزلceased الأيامthe days شيمتُهاtheir nature الغدرُtreachery
And how often, before you, have the days betrayed us,
and treachery has always been the days' nature.
وأغريand incited بناagainst us الدَّهرُTime الخؤونُthe treacherous صروفَهits vicissitudes
وماand not نحنُwe إلاّbut قطرةٌa drop منكfrom you ياO بحرُsea
And treacherous Time has unleashed its vicissitudes against us,
yet we are but a drop from you, O sea.
وإذand since فُتنَّاyou outstripped us سبقاًin racing إلىtoward غايةthe summit العُلَىglory
فأجدرُso more fitting مِنّاthan us أنthat يحاربكit wage war on you الدَّهرُTime
And since you outstripped us in the race to the summit of glory,
it is more fitting that Time should wage war on you than on us.
