ظننتُI thought وقدand indeed نَظَرتُI gazed إلىat سناهاher radiance
بأنَّthat النَيّراتthe heavenly lights لهاto her ضرائرُrival wives
I thought, as I gazed upon her radiance,
that the heavenly lights were her rival wives.
فمذْthen, when أبْصَرتُI beheld لَيلَthe night الفَرْعِthe tresses مِنْهاof hers
رأيتI saw الفَرْقَthe parting; the difference مثلَlike الصُّبحِthe dawn ظَاهِرْclear
But when I beheld the night of her tresses,
I saw the parting—and the difference—clear as dawn.
