To our Creator—glory be to Him—belong loosing and binding.

So Saturn brings no ill fortune, nor Jupiter good fortune.

He is wise, all-knowing, bounded by no limit.

For He has no before, and He has no after.

He orders the conditions of His servants with wisdom,

And knows what is hidden among them and what is manifest.

And brings near what none can approach,

And wards off what none can repel.

Misery and happiness—the Lord of Majesty decreed them both

Upon the servant; there is no escape from either one.

And He has entrusted freedom of choice, unrestricted,

To the servant; so let the servant take whatever course he wills.

So banishment and ruin upon the astrologer! For he

Has made a claim that makes the skin crawl.

And the lights of proof were not hidden; rather,

His inflamed eyes recoiled from the sun’s radiance.

And they are nothing but stars, O deluded one,

The One, the Self-Sufficient, the Unique sets them on their courses.

They exalt the Lord of the Throne—exalted is His majesty—

And know that God has no equal.

And behold, they are among the things whose creation points

To God—if only delusion had a limit!

So ruin upon those who made them arbiters and turned away

From right guidance, out of ignorance; so right guidance eluded them.

They attribute influence to them—a claim

At which the lofty, towering mountains all but crumble.

Before the Most Merciful, I disavow every unbeliever

Who goes forth at evening or morning holding to this claim.

And I have taken as an enemy whoever has blamed me for my creed,

Even were it my father and grandfather—far be it from them both.

A creed of truth—I shall remain steadfast

In it all my life, until the grave enfolds me.

In it I followed Zayd, the imam of guidance, whose

Qualities defy all enumeration and counting.

And my following Zayd’s path is indeed a blessing

For which, as long as I live, thanks and praise are too little.
