Do you know whom death has snatched away,

And for whose death the eyes have lain sleepless?

And who has weighed so heavily upon the necks,

And whose loss has unsteadied the steadfast mind?

And who has filled hearts with sorrow and grief,

So every young man grieves at his death?

And who now dwells in the Garden of Paradise,

With shade and flowing water at his side?

And which crescent has vanished from its horizon,

Though it had always adorned that horizon?

Do you know, O Time, through whose loss we were stricken

By your vicissitudes? Indeed, you are treacherous Time.

And, for what you have brought upon us,

You deserve to be regarded with suspicion.

If indeed you have clouded the lives of mortals,

Their creation began with water and clay.

The full moon has fallen—truly, it was he

Through whom the light of guidance shone clear.

The mountain has fallen, to which there once turned

The seeker of refuge and the helpless.

Gone is the noble lord who had been a treasure,

To whom needs and affairs were entrusted.

What cloud of tears, then, does not pour down?

And what heart of stone does not soften?

No coat of armor can ward off death's arrow,

Though wrought of mail; nor can an impregnable fortress.

May rain water you, O grave in which have come to dwell

    Piety, eminence, faith, and religion.

Within you rests the one who never had

A peer in any noble virtue.

We returned from his grave with an army of grief,

Lying in ambush in every limb.

We set the steeds of patience racing to bear his loss,

But the course of bereavement for him is long.

Alas for you, now dead and parted from us,

At whose parting our very vitals almost tear apart.

Ah, for your long absence from one who loves you!

But do sighing and longing avail?

Alas, my anguish for you, when there drew near

The soul's departure, and the moaning ceased!

You were laid in the earth against the wishes of a people

In whose hearts your place is firmly fixed.

Sleep almost settles over the corners of our eyes,

But at your memory the eyelids cast it off.

At your burial, we lavished necklaces of tears,

Stored away, not lightly spent for anyone but you.

We charged our inmost hearts to bear your loss with patience,

But they said, 'There is no rest, no stillness.'

The days betrayed us in taking you, yet

After you, we seek help in goodly patience.

But how can we bear your loss, or find consolation?

After you, we seek help in gracious patience.

Does your bier know who lay upon it?

Upon it lay all knowledge and certainty.

And does your tomb know whom it enfolded,

And who lies buried beneath its earth?

There you were joined with righteous deeds,

And enough for you that this is an excellent companion.

Your parting is grievous to the branches of learning,

And you are a fleet upon their surging sea.

A crescent moon you were, whom the nights snatched away,

And a lion you were, whom the lair gave up.

You made love for the Prophet's Household your religion,

Knowing it to be the firm rope.

And you followed their religion in every circumstance,

And that, by your life, is the certain truth.

And in Shiʿism you held a station

Toward whose height the eyes journey, yet fall short.

So may your arrival before the Generous One bring you joy,

Whose kingdom's treasuries are kāf and nūn.

And may your storing up the best of gains bring you joy,

When the wrongdoer is held in pledge for what he has earned,

And your receiving the scroll on the Day of Resurrection,

When the right hand comes forward to take it.

I shall compose for you verse lofty and precious,

Beside which precious pearls will seem cheap.

And I shall water your grave's earth with a rain of tears,

Beside which the pouring rain falls short.

For we have never heard of your like among mortals,

Nor has one ever existed, nor will one ever be.

May your Lord's blessing be upon you, after Taha

And his kindred, for you are worthy of it.
